So many people want to know what number backlinks can I add without being penalized that it must be one of the more popular questions out there pertaining to SEO, and I can tell you I am not clear on this issue. I read the forums and search on Google looking for the best answer and always come away with no hard evidence that tells you what the number is.
People worry that too many back links achieved too fast will get them penalized or dropped from Google. Then someone will ask what too many are, and everyone will have a different answer. If you submit articles to article directories, and your article gets picked up for publishing numerous times, does that get penalized? Or when news articles are posted on numerous news websites, are they penalized.
What I do for article marketing is post one article per day to directories for about three weeks with a new site, and then I will gradually increase the number of articles per day. This is supposed to look more natural to Google people say, so you have less chance of being penalized. This method has seemed to work OK for me so it apparently is a good method.
I know this is kind of a rambling article that does not answer the question very good. That is because it truly is hard to answer. Your best bet would be to go with the slow building of links and you will probably be better off in the long run.
